Feb 1778, Boyd McCreary appointed guardian of Jonathan Merrill, orphan of Benjamin Merrill, and gave security of L 200.
Boyd was Jonathan's brother-in-law; some genealogies say Jno was bound to Boyd in 1777, at age 12 or younger.

Married Nancy Elliot "of the Potts Creek section of Rowan Co, and settled in this section. They had one son and one daughter when the 1790 census was taken.
"He was `Capt Merrill' and tax collector for his section from 1809 through 1813. He owned much land and was evidently a man of considerable wealth."

Children in the hshld; they must have been raising some grandchildren. There's a girl 15-19, and 1 boy + 2 girls 10-14. Their own children were ages 51 - 25 in 1840.
