Merrill Hodgden was born in Delaware County, Ohio, 1859. He moved with his parents to Kansas where they homesteaded land near Galesburg. It was here that the Neosho Church (now Galesburg) was organized. He grew to young manhood there and was elected to the ministry, 1880. In 1884, he was married to Laura Grable. For years he served in the capacity of eldership of several churches after being ordained November 19, 1893. He spent his entire life in Southeast Kansas. Much of his later life was hampered by ill health diagnosed as a "Rheumatic Heart", but the undertaker stated he had cancer.
