Retracing Our Family Legacy
NOTES

Elizabeth Hampton
(1846 - 1919)

Elizabeth Hampton was born in Ross County, Ohio, June 14th, 1846. She was married to Firman ROUSSELLOT in Kenton County, Ky., May 2nd, 1867. To this union five children were born, four whom survive and were present at the funeral. They are Joseph of Milwaukee, Wis.; Mrs. Aletta Rees and Mrs. Carry McCullough and Mrs Lula Krause of Council Grove. Thirteen grandchildren also survive. The husband and a daughter proceeded her in death, the husband having died more than three years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Rosselot came to Kansas in 1871. Ohio and Kentucky were on the outposts of civilization in America in those days and only pioneers had come farther west. They came, a part of an honored and worthy group to open the way for the immigration that has borne fruitage in this great and proud commonwealth.

The husband was a builder and engaged in contracting and building business and those who knew him and his work say he was an accomplished workman and built well. Many of the early buildings in Council Grove and vicinity bore the mark of his handiwork.

This husband and wife lived and loved and reared their children in their prairie home in days when courage and stout hearts were required to brave the dangers.

Now they have passed beyond the sunset. The wife dying Nov. 19th after a very brief illness in her home here on Hall street, at the age of 73 years, 5 months and fifteen days. In the last years she has had the tender care and gentle affection of her children. She was a bible student and familiar with its contents and had very decided convictions regarding its teachings. She was born of Methodist parents. Funeral services were held at her late conducted by Capt. Rucker and the remains were tenderly laid to rest in Greenwood cemetery. Scores of neighbors and friends gathered to pay a last loving tribute of respect to the departed.

Beyond the sunsets even fall -- Unsettings suns shall rise again; the gates of morning shall unclose and usher the immortal day; When trammels drop and fetters fall -- In that glad land of ageless love, With laughter and with happy songs. The golden harvest we shall reap, From sowings of our sweetest dreams; The sun shall never more go down, Nor darkening shadows come again; Unwasting splendorsshall illume, The unguessed gladness of that land, Where love with love shall meet again, beyond he sunset and the night
